Goal Reflection

Pre-Game

When I started the Master in the Arts of Education program my focus was to become a more effective teacher, coach and leader. I aimed to improve both as a physical education and science teacher. I knew the classes provided in MAED program would allow me to increase my knowledge of teaching, coaching and leadership. I knew it would take hard work and dedication in order to become a more effective teacher, coach and leader. I prepared myself for long days and nights, lots of reading and papers. But I had also prepared myself to learn. I came into the program with the idea of not just getting through the program, but truly getting something out of it. My objective was to improve everyday as a teacher, coach, and leader. I wanted to take what I was learning in my classes and immediately implement them into my practices in order to foster positive development of my students and players.

I specially chose coaching as my concentration. Coaching and physical education have a lot of similarities but they are far from the same thing.  I wanted to have a positive influence on children of all ages. My goal was to employ lifelong skills such as work ethic, responsibility, overcoming adversity and leadership in students and players. In order to achieve these goals I knew I would have to advance my teaching and coaching abilities.

Game

As I embarked in the MAED program I found myself evolving as a teacher and coach. Some aspects of the program were easier than I originally thought, while others were much more difficult. What remained consistent, however, was the process of learning.

In my teaching with technology class I discovered all new ways to apply technology into my lessons. I used glogster, wikispaces, and created my own vodcast. In another course I learned about the foundation of education along with many theories and practices I could apply to my own teaching.

Many of my classes dealt with coaching. I learned about developing a positive youth program. In my legal issues for administrations and coaches I learned more than I ever thought I would about the legalities and liabilities involved in coaching and athletic administration. Every module in that class taught me applicable skills and knowledge I started using immediately.

Overall each class enhanced my ability as a teacher and coach. Many of my goals remained the same but now I was closer to achieving those goals. Other goals, such as teaching with more technology arose while completing the program. Other skills, such as time management, teamwork and communication have been reinforced and sharpened.

Post-Game

This may be the end of the MAED program but it is just the beginning of continued learning. What I have learned thus far has already been useful in my teaching and coaching. The readings, assignments and other course work have allowed me to be a more effective teacher, coach and leader. I was able to meet my goals and I will continue to learn, build and evolve. The MAED program has provided a strong upgrade to my teaching and coaching knowledge.
